Top 3 Best Online Backgammon Websites

Updated 2026:
If you’re looking for the best places to play backgammon online, you’ll quickly notice there are dozens of platforms out there. We’ve tested them all over the past few years, and in our opinion only a handful truly stand out.

Below are the online backgammon platforms we personally use and recommend in 2026, depending on how and where you like to play — whether that’s on desktop, mobile, or tablet.

1 – Nextgammon (Best Overall Online Backgammon Platform)

Nextgammon took the world of online backgammon by storm since its release. It offers everything a serious backgammon player needs to improve and compete at a high level.

You get deep analysis of every game you play, options to play variants such as Nackgammon, Hypergammon, or Tavla, and access to a rich academy section filled with articles and learning resources.

What truly sets Nextgammon apart is its use of blockchain technology to guarantee fair dice. All roll data is publicly accessible, ensuring full transparency and fairness for every player.

In 2026, Nextgammon remains one of the most innovative platforms in the online backgammon space. Weekly challenges, rankings, and performance leaderboards keep the experience competitive and engaging.

2 – Backgammon Cash (Best Online Backgammon App for iOS & Mac)

Backgammon Cash deserves a place among the best online backgammon platforms in 2026, especially for players who prefer playing on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Unlike traditional browser-based platforms, Backgammon Cash is built specifically for modern devices, offering a smooth, intuitive experience and fast gameplay against real players. The app is available worldwide for free play, making it an excellent option for casual and intermediate players alike.

One standout feature is its smart notification system, which lets you step away while waiting for an opponent and alerts you when a game is ready — a small but very practical improvement over most platforms.

For players located in eligible US states, Backgammon Cash also offers legal real-money games in a regulated environment. Even without playing for money, the app remains one of the most enjoyable ways to practice backgammon online.

3 – Backgammon Galaxy (Popular & Competitive Web Play)

After being a long-time reference for the backgammon community, Backgammon Galaxy has changed direction following a major update. The platform is still solid, but now incorporates a coin-based system similar to what you find in many social gaming platforms.

You no longer have full freedom to select your opponent unless you play with friends. While post-game analysis is still available, some features now require a monthly membership of $7.99.

That said, Backgammon Galaxy continues to attract a large player base in 2026, with frequent tournaments and an active ranking system. Its web app runs smoothly and remains a popular choice for players who enjoy structured competition.

Backgammon Studio (Honorable mention)

Backgammon Studio is the oldest platform in our selection, and while its interface may feel dated, it remains a true Swiss army knife for many backgammon enthusiasts.

What sets Backgammon Studio apart is that it goes far beyond simple gameplay. In addition to playing matches, you can study positions, watch recorded backgammon matches, take quizzes to assess your level, and explore a wide range of educational tools. It’s a platform designed as much for learning as it is for playing.

Even if it doesn’t look as polished as newer platforms, Backgammon Studio is well worth trying. If you’re serious about improving your understanding of the game, you’ll find a wealth of valuable resources here.

Backgammon Studio Heroes is still the platform of choice for serious competitors in 2026. Endorsed by major federations and known for its powerful analysis tools, it attracts a highly dedicated community. While the interface feels old-school compared to platforms like Backgammon Cash or Nextgammon, its depth and competitive focus more than make up for it.

  1. LOL you have backgammon galaxy as number 1? They do not use random dice there. Admitted by the admins. The dice are tied into the their teaching system. They gave up on doing win/loss as important. Instead they set up what they say are the best moves. If you conform and play by what they deam the proper rolls then you get fewer “Errors” so even if you lose you get fewer errors. The dice are tied into the system. They ai is situational ai set up for drama with crazy rolls.

Its easily hackable too. I was able to boost my rating there from 1500 to 2100 by winning 30 straight games. No I did not even move a piece to do it.

The site is hackable, full of cheaters (including me) and dice are not random. Makes me wonder about what made this list of best backgammon sites. You are out in left field on recommendations.

  2. Do all these games allow you to play your checkers without having to play the higher number on the dice first? Many games have this programmed and makes it impossible to play game correctly. Do you know what I mean? Appreciate it if I can find a fair game . Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Ruth! On those platforms, you simply have to click on the dice once they are rolled to change which one you want to play first.
